The hidden disability so few have heard of, but so many struggle with (we're talking 2 students in every classroom!). People with DLD have a unique difficulty understanding and/or using language. They do NOT have low intelligence and often excel in multiple other skills! 1 session? 1 term? 1 year? 🤔 It depends! Communication is a complex thing, and we know from experience that everyone who walks through our (virtual!) doors will respond to therapy differently. However, what we can say with certainty is that some conditions are much more likely to require long-term therapy (swipe to find out which ones! ➡) than some others (such as a simple articulation error) that can be fixed quickly with the right approach. But of course, how much time you and your family are currently able to commit to speech therapy is a different conversation altogether, and is something to discuss privately with your therapist. When we do some digging, we discover that it is actually the child's language skills that need our support. Confused yet? Let us explain. 💙 SPEECH refers to the spoken sounds that make up language (in other words, how we articulate). A child who pronounces things unclearly may have difficulty with their speech skills. 💙 LANGUAGE refers to the words that we can understand and use when we are communicating. A child with a small vocabulary may have difficulty with their language skills. Other times, speech and language difficulties can co-exist, and it can be hard to figure out exactly what is going on.
